Kitil farm is a licensed open quarantine which operates in Kenya. We grow bamboo seedlings using biotechnology.

The current global awakening on the use of bamboo as an indispensable alternative source of timber away from traditional timber and other usages mainly in paper industry, building material, tiny and cottage industries, handicrafts, medicinal products, edible shoots and new generation products such as wood substitutes, truck bodies, railway carriages, bamboo boards, tiles etc. has created an awareness of the importance of bamboo cultivation at large scale.

The micro propagation of bamboo is a tedious and expensive exercise. This is largely because bamboo species are widely distributed and it is sometimes not easy to locate a mother plant for propagation, most of the bamboo species are almost impossible to propagate from stem, successful homegrown protocol for the various species are not widely shared amongst developers.

In addition, "culture initiation especially from adult field culms, difficulty of rooting of axillary shoots and the inconsistency in somatic embryogenesis are some of the difficulties encountered. Indeed, "the existence of rare seeding and physiologically sterile species makes tissue culture an important technique for their propagule production and improvement" S.M.S.D. Ramanayake

The use of seed for micro proliferation is not a sustainable approach since very few species seed in their lifetime, and those that do, seed once in 70 to 130 years, equally bamboo seeds have a very short shelf live and special storage is required. Such storage facilities are sometimes non existent where seeds are collected and the date of collection is sometimes a moving target. Many bamboo seeds do not change in their general physiology even when they are expired. This makes the purchase of bamboo seeds for purposes of germination, a very tricky and risky undertaking.

At Kitil Farm, we deploy very high standards of micro propagation to ensure that our seedlings have a high degree of rooting and survival even under very harsh conditions. Using our own homegrown protocols, we now comfortably supply millions of plantlets and seedlings to any destination on the world.

In this regards we have a profound experience in the use of Tissue Culture laboratory, the establishment of such TC lab, in training and management of TC lab. We also have developed useful protocols for this process.
