BAMBOO CHARCOAL

Bamboo charcoal briquettes are ideal for cooking because they burn longer, produces less smoke, no air pollution compared to ‘natural timber’ charcoal. Bamboo charcoal has a much highier absorbitibility than wood charcoal. It can therefore be used for a wide range of applications including purification and absorbtion of impurities and dangerous metals, in drinking water filters, air filters, gas masks, matresses and pillows, as deodorizers, and industrial purification. Bamboo vinegar which is a by product of the bamboo manufacturing process, is used as an ingridient in health products.

ADVANTAGES OF METAL CHARCOAL KILNS

Quick: Cycle duration is about 4-8 hours + 2 hours for charcoal cooling

Simple: Designs are flexible and portable to prevalent sites

Saves time: Requires minimum control and observation during working time

Efficient: Have high charcoal yields with minimum partial wood burning at the initial stages

Economic: Have low running costs and creates employment

Have low environmental impacts: The gas that evolves as a by-product during the charcoaling process cannot escape into the air and with careful planning can be trapped as another fuel. You can burn plant twigs and prunes into charcoal to save trees.

Size: They are of good sizes:

Durable: The more careful you are, the more durable the kilns become

Worries: You pack and light your wood and sleep without worries of puncturing as are traditional earth kilns

TAKING CARE OF YOUR BAMBOO KILN

The kiln should be thoroughly cleaned after production.

Operate and store your kiln under a shaded area and free from dump and wet environment to reduce corrosion.v

Do not wash nor splash water on a kiln any time

Keep children away from the kiln. They can prick it with sharp objects or roll it for fun.

Kiln charcoal fuels have no carbon monoxide, therefore, suitable for meat roasting a Kenyan delicacy. The medium size kiln cost Ksh 8,500 and the large size will cost Ksh 85,000. These kilns are made on order.

CALORIFIC VALUE (HEAT CONTENT) OF BAMBOO

According to a recent analysis on the Heat Content Ranges for Various Biomass Fuels (dry weight basis), bamboo has a heating values of 19,000 - 19,750 in kj/kg and 19.0 - 19.8 MJ/kg, respectively. While eucalyptus, has a heating values of 19,000 - 19,599 in kj/kg and 19.0 - 19.6 MJ/kg, respectively.

Bamboo, if treated properly has a very similar calorific value to wood. It's benefits do not lie in a higher calorific value, but rather of its growing properties and time to maturity, says Camille Rebelo of Ecoplanet bamboo.
