Hardwood trees can take 30 to 40 years, bamboo can reach full maturity in 3 to 4 years (depending on species).

Specific application of bamboo as timber and and basic ROI:

The full length of a mature culm(stem) of O. abyssinica is between 10-15m tall and up to 10cm in diameter. The culms are solid in the lower internodes, and hollow from the upper half to the top of the culm. A bamboo clump can yield up to 150 culms per year. Each culm can yield timber measuring 3x3 inches and 27 feet long. A clump of the solid bamboo can therefore yield 4050 feet of hardwood bamboo timber i.e. (27 feet x 150 culms) per year. An acre of land will take 166 to 244 bamboo clumps and a resultant total yield of 672300 to 988200 feet of hardwood bamboo timber i.e. (4050 feet per clump x 166 to 244 clumps). One foot(12 inches) of hardwood timber in a timber yard store in Nairobi, Kenya can cost Ksh 30. The value of hardwood bamboo timber yield per acre, per year can be estimated at Ksh 2.1 to 2.9 million.

A wood making machine (Linda) is sufficient for primary processing of bamboo woodblock. The cost of the wood making machine (Linda) in Kenya is Ksh 75K. It is run by two operators each earning Ksh 18,000 per month.

Go-Bamboo as an alternative to traditional timber and earn millions per acre, per year

Specific application of bamboo as bamboo floor blocks and basic ROI;

Hardwood trees can take 30 to 40 years, bamboo can reach full maturity in 3 to 4 years (depending on species).

Bamboo can replace the use of wood for any application including hardwood floors. Bamboo is an attractive alternative for flooring since it is hardwood if harvested after 3-4 years of age. The solid bamboo (O. abyssinica) whose culms are 10-15m tall and up to 10cm in diameter, are solid in the lower internodes, and hollow from the upper half to the top, and whose timber can measure 3x3 inches and 27 feet long per culm, is ideal for bamboo woodblock flooring.

In the Kenyan market, a wood block of mahogany measuring 8x2.72x0.75 inches cost Ksh 35 each. One square foot takes 7 pieces of wood blocks. Accordingly, one square meter takes 245 pieces. The cost of purchasing wood blocks for one square foot is Ksh 245 i.e (7 pieces x Ksh 35) while blocks for one square meter will cost Ksh 2450 i.e (70 pieces x Ksh 35).

An acre of land planted with mature solid bamboo (O. abyssinica) will give a total yield of 672,300 to 988,200 feet of hardwood bamboo timber i.e. (4050 feet per clump x 166 to 244 clumps). Assuming that one bamboo block is one foot, an acre of land will yield 672,300 to 988,200 bamboo blocks. The value of bamboo blocks per acre, per year could be estimated at around Ksh 23.5 to Ksh 34.5 million.
